Sigmund Freud lived in Vienna for over 80 years. Surprisingly, he never got to like his city, yet she was a keystone in developing the psychoanalysis. We will take a walk through the 9th district where Freud lived and worked. During the Fin de Siècle Vienna was a bastion of conservatism and yet the city was a birth place of Modernism. This duality was what intrigued Freud and helped him discover the human mind.

He was a doctor who shocked not only society but his peers alike, yet he was not alone in his thinking. We will explore how he and his contemporaries paved the way for the 20th century and how they were able to shape our lives to this day.

Our Route

We will meet at the large staircase in front of Vienna’s Main University. From there we will head into the university’s courtyard before we set out to explore Sigmund Freud’s steps in Vienna’s 9th district. We will pass the memorial for the Shoa, wander through the old hospital where he once worked and finally end at his flat in Berggasse 19 in which the Freud Museum is located. The tour does not include a visit of the museum. Feel free to explore it on your own afterwards.
